What is AI, really?
Before you can deploy AI responsibly in loss prevention, you need a working definition that holds up in a meeting with your team, your video analytics vendor, and your leadership.
A working definition
Artificial intelligence is software that produces outputs (decisions, predictions, alerts, matches, images) by learning patterns from data, rather than by following rules a human wrote step by step.
The shift that matters
Traditional software does what a developer told it to do. AI does what the data told it to do. That single change is why AI needs its own governance layer, especially when it is watching your stores.
Traditional automation
Rules and workflows written by humans. Predictable, and often marketed as AI when it isn't.
Examples: a POS rule that flags every void over $50, a door alarm triggered by an EAS tag, a scheduling spreadsheet for guard coverage.
Machine learning
Systems that learn patterns from historical data to make predictions or classifications.
Examples: POS exception reporting that scores transactions for likely sweethearting, shrink analytics that flag stores trending high, self-checkout loss detection that catches scan-avoidance, ORC group detection that links incidents across locations.
Generative AI
Models that produce new content (text, images, summaries, audio) from patterns learned in massive training data.
Examples: tools that auto-draft incident reports from case notes, summarize hours of CCTV footage, or generate investigative case summaries for prosecution packages.
Where AI already lives in your organization
Even without an official AI strategy, AI is almost certainly inside your asset protection program already.
- Video analytics and CCTV motion or behavior alerts
- Facial recognition and person-of-interest matching
- License plate recognition at parking lots and loading docks
- POS exception reporting and refund/void scoring
- Self-checkout loss detection
- Shrink analytics and store-level risk scoring
- Case management systems that auto-link related incidents
The deployer takeaway
Remember
You do not choose whether AI enters your asset protection program. You choose whether it enters responsibly.
The rest of this course gives you the ten aspects to answer for, one lesson at a time.
